How to score high in English paper of competitive exams ( esp Ssc Cgl ) , and increase your marks many fold
English is a compulsory paper in most competitive examinations. Generally, 33% to 60% of the total marks are assigned to English language paper. It plays a significant role in the interview and descriptive paper.
When I started preparing for competitive exams, I was not as bad in English as in other papers. In the first attempt, My marks in math paper were 60 less than my marks in English paper. But increasing marks in other papers was easy as compared to increasing marks in English paper. Though math marks can be increased significantly with practice, practice alone is not sufficient for English paper.
I found that my English language learning in general and marks, in particular, were stagnating. Improving marks by few points became an uphill task.
Talking with many of my fellow aspirants and seniors provided me eye-opening insights into this phenomenon. One of these insights was competition books would not help me beyond a certain point (I belong to an average IQ club). I would need some other techniques and ways to improve my score. And one of the ways that I came across was to study the basics and fundamentals of English grammar. Though competition books provide short cuts and rules, they are not sufficient to score high. These tricks and shortcuts fail in front of slightly tilted or modified questions.
So clear understanding of the basics and a strong foundation of English grammar is a must to score high in English paper of the ssc cgl exam or of any other exam. Other than that strong vocabulary and understanding of word formation is also a must. A better understanding of basic English grammar and word formation can give us an edge over other aspirants. And Increase in marks is a logical consequence of this understanding.
I hope that this article will help you understand.
