Test and gap – Long term and deep learning
Test and gap method is best if you want to learn a subject
in deep and retain it for a long time. In recent researches, it has
outperformed all other learning methods in the areas of depth and
understanding. Students that used test and gap method performed in standardised
tests better than those students who did not use
this learning method. In this method, the learner
must face quizzes after every few hours of study. When a student knows he has
to face a quiz after a learning session, his concentration and understanding improve. Most important thing in this method is
to reproduce on a paper whatever you study on a consistent
basis. Before actually reading a subject, think about the questions you will
have to answer after the reading. This will also give you an understanding of
what you want out of that reading session. You can also write down what goals
you want to achieve from a particular learning session. After you have done
that start the learning session or actual reading. Once the reading is finished, do some other work or take
a break of 1 or 2 hours. After the break, sit down to write answers to the
questions. These questions can be the same, which you thought about before
actual reading or completely new questions. Recalling what you have read a few hours ago makes the learning lessons
permanent in mind.
For example, if you want to read three subjects physics,
English, and history. You can schedule these subjects in a way, to provide
answer writing time between the ends of a subject lesson and starting of a new
lesson.
