Writing: essay
Introduction
In this part, you should explain the topic of the essay in brief. After explaining the topic you
should clearly state your thesis or main idea, and declare your position on the
topic. Your thesis should be unbiased and objective, and must not state
opinions as facts. This part should make up 20% of total essay contents.
Body
In the body of the essay, you have to prove and substantiate your
thesis with evidence, facts, and
arguments. Many students make the mistake
of deviating too much from the topic of the essay. Flexibility is good, but too
much deviation can make the essay incoherent, and the examiner may deduct marks for this incoherency.
You should support your thesis with at least three evidence or arguments and each of these three
arguments should be written in separate paragraphs. Examiners also expect
examples of each argument you provide.
Conclusion
In conclusion, you should summarize all that you have
written in introduction and body. The purpose
of the conclusion is convincing the examiner
that you have took a proper stand on the topic and has supported it well with evidence and arguments. You must not introduce
new ideas in conclusion part. It is supposed to be a closing of your essay. However,
you may give a thought provoking statement at the end of your conclusion.
