Attaching
Attaching is linking a set of things with another set of things
then using this linking to remember information written in one set by encoding
given information into the second set. We
take a unique second set that is easy to remember. Now once we have remembered
this linking of two sets, we can apply it to remember any new information. Keep
in mind attaching and mind location system once learned can be applied to
remember any new information.
Attaching also known as pegging has been described in detail
by Harry Lorayne and Jerry Lucas in The Memory Book (1974) [Source (1)]. You
can read Linking in chapter “Methods and Tools” for a detailed explanation. Number rhyming
Pegging is also given in chapter “Mastering Life Skills”. In that chapter, we have pegged numbers with rhyming
words like 0 with the hero, one with a gun etc. Now to remember 10 we will imagine a
hero shooting with a gun.
Other than number
rhyming we can use this method to link
numbers with sounds of consonants, and then create
words out of these alphabets using vowels. Keep in mind that when decoding the
word we ignore vowels as they were used only to form a proper word. This system
is also given in detail by Harry Lorayne and Jerry Lucas in The Memory Book
(1974). [Source (1)]
