Replacement
Replacement is used to remember difficult words or abstract
things. This method is also known as substitute method and has been described
in detail by Harry Lorayne and Jerry Lucas in The Memory Book (1974). In this method, we replace the difficult word with one
or more easy to remember words.
For example- To remember capital of Afghanistan, we will
apply replacement technique as follows-
Imagine Osama riding a bull.
Now whenever you see it, you will know Capital of Afghanistan (Osama) is
Kabul(Bul). Most people associate Osama with Afghanistan although he was a
Saudi. Key is to substitute Kabul with Bul and then associate Afghanistan with
Bul. To do this, substitute Afghanistan with Osama and then associate Osama
with a bull.
